Ring Sling, Mei Tai or Stretch Sling: how to choose |
If you are thinking of buying a baby sling or a mei tai, you will be probably wondering which kind is the best and which one matchs better quality and price.
When we were expecting our daughter Elena we were surfing the net for hours looking for the best baby sling without spending a fortune. We wanted something good, not to expensive that could also look cool for both my husband and I. So: no stripes, nothing to hippy or to bright; and then the colour … no pink, no boring colours, no laud colours … at the end we went for a dark blue, nice and elegant.
Our first dilemma was: stretch sling or pouch sling? We didn’t even taken into consideration other kinds of baby sling, such as a ring sling or a mei tai, as at the
time there was no much information about babywearing.
The stretch sling, once worn on, looked like a shirt where our baby could be worm and cuddled. The pouch sling was also catching our attention as it can be used in many different positions. For both the stretch and the pouch sling, the benefits for the baby were the same ( a baby sling prevents and soothes baby colic, facilitates the breastfeeding on request, develops good posture – it also prevents hips dysplasia – it helps the bonding between the baby and the carer …). After a lot of thinking, we agreed on to points:
1. The stretch sling is cheapest.
2. The pouch sling looks like a cotton sling, quite simple to make. Same can not be said about the stretch sling, as the material needs to be the right one.
We started our experience as “kangaroo parents”.
If I could go back, I would probably make the same choice: the warmth, the comfort and the embrace of a stretch sling are priceless for a newborn! Plus, once worn on, you baby can easily be put on and of the stretch sling, without untie it (this is not possible with a pouch sling).
The stretch sling though can be used up to 6 – 7 kg.
